Yukon Liberal Party announces plan to make life more affordable and put money back in Yukoners’ pockets
The Yukon Liberal Party has released its 2025 Platform, which lays out a clear and concrete plan to make life more affordable for Yukoners, strengthen local communities, and support families across the territory. The plan focuses on putting money back in Yukoners’ pockets, supporting families, and building a stronger, more sustainable future for everyone. It builds on the Liberal Party’s record of responsible leadership, partnership with First Nations, and a commitment to putting Yukoners at the heart of every decision.
“We all know life’s getting more expensive these days. Groceries, gas, housing— it all adds up. That’s why we will take real, practical steps to make things easier. We will help Yukoners keep more of what they earn and make sure no one gets left behind. Our plan is about supporting families, building strong communities, and creating opportunities that last”
- Mike Pemberton, Leader of the Yukon Liberal Party
“As a father and small business owner, I know firsthand the challenges Yukoners are facing to keep life affordable and support their families. I’ve spent my career working to strengthen our local economy and bring people together, and I know this plan will make a real difference for Yukoners like me. Together with our Liberal team, we are committed to practical, collaborative solutions that make life better for everyone across the territory.”
- Louis Gagnon, Yukon Liberal Candidate for Porter Creek Centre
“As a father, small business owner, and career banker, I understand the challenges Yukoners face. For over a decade, people have trusted my advice and commitment to helping them reach their financial goals. Our Liberal party has a strong plan to bring down costs and create better opportunities for families working hard to get ahead. You can count on me to bring that same dedication to representing you.”
- Abdullah Khalid, Yukon Liberal Candidate for Takhini
Backgrounder:
Making Life More Affordable
To help Yukoners with rising costs, a re-elected Liberal government will: • Invest $30 million over four years in the Winter Electrical Affordability Rebate, reducing household electricity bills by an average of $600 per year.
Increase funding for the Early Learning and Childcare Program to maintain $10- a-day childcare and ensure centres can continue providing high-quality care.
Continue the Paid Sick Leave Program, protecting workers and families.
Increase the Children’s Fitness and Arts Tax Credits by 50%, helping families keep kids active, creative, and engaged.
Tackling Housing Costs
Liberal investments in housing will focus on innovative, community-based solutions that create lasting affordability:
Support the non-profit housing sector — including the Northern Community Land Trust and Habitat for Humanity — with financing, land, and other resources.
Continue the Housing Initiatives Fund, which supports projects that remain affordable for at least 20 years.
Partner with development corporations to expand affordable housing options.
Support the development of modular and secondary suite housing to increase density and lower costs.
Introduce a builders’ lottery to ensure local homebuilders have access to land.
Strengthening Local Economies and Good Jobs
To grow local economies and create opportunities in every community, the Yukon Liberal Party will:
Support a resilient local food economy by sourcing 5% of government food purchases from Yukon-grown products by 2025.
Work with Yukon First Nations and the business community to strengthen procurement policies and support workforce development.
Advocate for an expanded Yukon Nominee Program to help fill labour needs, especially in rural areas.
Invest in local training programs to help youth and workers gain the skills they need.
Reduce red tape for labour mobility and small business growth.
Supporting Tourism, Culture, and Community
Yukon’s tourism industry is thriving, and Liberals will continue to support sustainable, inclusive growth:
Partner with Chu Níikwän LP and the Yukon Convention Bureau to advance the new Yukon Convention Centre, exploring sustainable funding and training opportunities.
Update the Yukon Tourism Development Strategy following the completion of the new centre.
Continue to support Indigenous tourism, positioning Yukon as a premier destination for Indigenous cultural experiences.
Develop wilderness and heritage tourism assets with First Nations, municipalities, and local partners.
Support Whitehorse’s waterfront as a cultural and community hub.
Building a Sustainable and Responsible Resource Sector
Mining is a cornerstone of Yukon’s economy, and the Liberals will continue to advance responsible, modern practices that protect the land and create long-term prosperity: • Support a modern, responsible, and responsive mining industry in partnership with Yukon First Nations.
Continue to modernize mining legislation and oversight to prevent incidents and strengthen accountability.
Increase inspection and monitoring capacity, and explore partnerships with First Nations Land Guardians.
Engage with workers, First Nations, and industry experts to ensure the benefits of development are shared by all Yukoners.
